Hebrews 3-4 | The Essential Combination

There is no lack of promises from God—over 7,000 in the Bible. Some are unconditional (things God says He will always do). But most are conditional (things God says He will do if we cooperate). Look at a small, but powerful sample:

  • "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God and the necessary wisdom will be given him." (James 1:2)
  • "My grace is sufficient for you" (2 Cor. 12:9)
  • "Ask and it will be given you, seek and you will find, knock and the door shall be opened to you" (Matt. 7:7)
  • "Give and it will be given unto you" (Luke 6:38)
  • "I will never leave you nor forsake you" (Heb 13:5)
  • "If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto Myself that where I am, there you may be also." (John 14:3)
  • "I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing." (John 15:5)
  • "For such is our God, our God forever and ever; He will guide us until death." (Psalm 48:14)

We could fill pages with these promises. Everyone holds the absolute assurance from God of every single thing that we need.

So, what's the disconnect? Why are we not living in these promises? Accessing them? Experiencing them? One word: faith.

Hebrews 4:1-2 Therefore, let us fear if, while a promise remains of entering His rest, any one of you may seem to have come short of it. For indeed we have had good news preached to us, just as they also; but the word they heard did not profit them, because it was not united by faith in those who heard.

A promise has two parts: God and man. God is the giver, man the receiver. God is faithful, but we must have faith. We must trust God. This is not just something in our heads. Faith is accepting the promise mentally and responding obediently. It is walking and talking like what God says is really true.

If I want to enter His rest, have His provision, find His guidance, bear much fruit, it begins with His promises, but it must end with our willingness to trust Him completely.

If you're not experiencing God through His promises, it’s time to start trusting.

Father, thank You for the myriad of promises in Your Word. And thank you that these are real—they are designed for me to experience. Help me to believe and obey. To live my life trusting You and showing the world that You are a faithful God.
