Genesis 6-7 | The Inescapable Judgment of God

The water prevailed fifteen cubits higher, and the mountains were covered. All flesh that moved on the earth perished, birds and cattle and beasts and every swarming thing that swarms upon the earth, and all mankind; of all that was on the dry land, all in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life, died. (Genesis 7:20-22)

God is perfect in every way. He is perfect in His love and mercy. But He is also perfect in judgment and utterly faithful to His warnings as well as His promises.

THE DARKNESS OF NOAH’S DAY

During the early days of history, the people were completely corrupt. This corruption was noticed by God, and it grieved his heart.

Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. The Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. (Genesis 6:5-6)

There was one man who was righteous in all his ways. Noah “found favor in the eyes of the Lord” and “walked with God” (Genesis 6:8-9). He was a shining anomaly in a godless culture.

GOD’S JUDGMENT

God had warned mankind of the consequences of sin, but they ignored Him repeatedly. And so, He brought judgment to destroy everything on the earth except Noah, his family, and enough pairs of animals to repopulate the earth. The rest of the earth perished.

God is immutable. He is the same “yesterday, today, and forever.” The same mercy exists for those who will turn to Him in dependence and trust in His Son for the forgiveness of their sins. But also, the same judgments are coming. Those who ignore Him and go their own way are under the judgment of God. They will be separated from Him in this life and eternally separated in the life to come.

You can laugh at His judgment and mock what He has put in place. But it will not change the reality. “The wages of sin is death,” God says. And those who ignore His provision for salvation will suffer the worst of God’s judgments. It will be real, personal, and inescapable. It would be wise to heed His voice and accept the merciful offer He provides; wise to give glory and honor to the One who created us all.

Father, thank You for providing a way of escape for each of us. Thank You for sending Your Son to die in our place so we can escape the righteous, complete judgment of God upon sin. Give us the courage to open our mouths and tell others about Your judgment against sin that is coming so that they could believe and receive Your mercy.
