Exodus 8-9 | Discerning an Unrepentant Heart
Often in our dealings with others, we see them make temporary turns to the Lord, but something is just not right. Moses saw this unrepentance in Pharaoh. Pharaoh pled with Moses to take away the plague of thunder and hail. Moses agreed but then added: "But as for you and your servants, I know that you do not fear the Lord God." (Exodus 9:31)
Only God knows the true condition of men's hearts, but there are times and distinct reasons why God will give the discerning Christian insight about others. There is a reason for this. Sometimes we must be careful not to entrust too much to someone we are discipling, knowing that they're not quite ready for that load of responsibility or ministry.
Or it may be that we will not push through in discipling another because we ASSUME that their turning has been accomplished. In fact, they may not be there at all.
How did Jesus evaluate men? "By their fruits you will know them" he told His followers (Matthew 7). Time will illustrate whether a man is wholly devoted to the Lord. Also, how he spends his time, treasures, and talents is a massive indicator of his true heart (and ours).
