Joshua 23-24 | The God Who Fights For Us

It is essential to pause and remember all that God has done, is doing, and can do. Joshua stands in his closing challenge to Israel right before his death. He recounts for them all that God has done and challenges them very specifically in what their next steps are.

In so doing, he reminds them of God's power in battle.

One of your men puts to flight a thousand, for the Lord your God is He who fights for you, just as He promised you. So take diligent heed to yourselves to love the Lord your God. (Joshua 23:10-11)

He reminded them (and us) …

WITH GOD, THE ODDS ARE CHANGED.

"One man can put to flight a thousand…"

We must never forget that we are not powerless. As Paul would say in the New Testament: "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13).

GOD IS FIGHTING ON OUR BEHALF.

"For the Lord, your God is He who fights for you."

God knows you, knows those who oppose you, and can work on both sides. He puts enemies to flight and turns the hearts of Kings like rivers of water. There's nothing too difficult for Him.

GOD IS DOING WHAT GOD DOES WHEN WE COOPERATE WITH HIM, FULFILLING HIS PROMISES.

"… just as He promised."

He has given us 7,000 promises in His Word. They are there to bring us to a place of dependency and faith. When we believe Him based on what He has promised, we will never be disappointed.

WE MUST BE CAREFUL TO NOT LOSE THIS BY WALKING AWAY FROM HIM, AND THE KEY TO THIS IS TO LOVE HIM.

"So take diligent heed to yourselves to love the Lord your God." The ultimate goal is not deliverance from your enemies, but deliverance from self-centeredness to loving God with all your heart!

When asked what the greatest commandment was, Jesus said it was to love God fully. We are to lay aside other affections that harm us and focus our passion like a laser on Him. Nothing is more life-changing, and nothing is more satisfying. Our love for Him will cause us to follow Him where duty fails to motivate.

Father, thank You for all that You are. But I give thanks today that You are my great Warrior. My General-in-the-field. My Commander-in-Chief. I am not alone in this battle but am empowered and led by One who has never lost a battle. Thank You for Your protection and promises and that I have the privilege of serving with You in Your great Kingdom enterprise!
