1 Samuel 19-20 | Manly Love

Jonathan made David vow again because of his love for him because he loved him as he loved his own life. (1 Samuel 20:17)

It's tragic in this day of increased homosexuality in our nation that we lose the ability to talk about and express one of the most powerful relational emotions in life.

Jonathan and David had no "same-sex attraction" as the world defines it currently. But what they did have was the powerful spiritual and emotional bond between two men that made them the best of friends.

This kind of manly love makes you love a friend "as you love your own life." And you will do anything for them; make vows on their behalf; protect them and serve them. This is the kind of love Jesus had for His disciples. And we see the ultimate love as He lay down His life for their salvation.

As godly men (and women), we must show the world this kind of male-to-male, female-to-female godly friendships and love. Let's take back what the world has perverted!

I love the line in the movie "First Knight," where the men of the Round Table stand together and say, "Life to life, shoulder to shoulder, one in life or death." Such loyal friendships, fueled by our relationship with Christ, provide something in this life that nothing else can afford.

Father, thank You that we can redeem what the world has perverted. Give us friendships in our life that bring joy and power, and purpose to our lives. And help us to be that kind of friend to others.
