Amos 1, 9 | Judgment & Restoration

The entire book of Amos is a prophecy against Israel as they have rebelled against the Lord. Chapter after chapter recounts Israel’s sin and God’s coming judgment. As we look back through history, we can trace the absolute fulfillment of this judgment in Israel’s history

But the final chapter (Chapter 9) reminds them and us of His faithfulness to His promises made long before.

8 “Behold, the eyes of the Lord God are on the sinful kingdom,

And I will destroy it from the face of the earth;

Nevertheless, I will not destroy the house of Jacob,”

Declares the Lord

14 “Also I will restore the captivity of My people Israel,

And they will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them;

They will also plant vineyards and drink their wine,

And make gardens and eat their fruit.

15 “I will also plant them on their land,

And they will not again be rooted out from their land

Which I have given them,”

Says the Lord your God.

God fulfilled this promise in 1948 when Israel was returned to her land. True to His promise, God has restored her and established her in her land.

What does this mean to us? It means, practically, that God has a unique place for Israel in His plan. We should acknowledge this and cooperate with God in our prayers for the peace of Jerusalem.

But even more practically, it should cause us to believe in God. To trust His other 7,000 promises in the Bible. To realize that God is faithful and holds true to what He has promised.

He did it for Israel, and He will do it for you.
